about

"Softer Spaces" by Ingrid Lee
Softer Spaces uses a recording of the last piece performed in the Berkeley Art Museum, György Ligeti’s Poeme Symphonique (1962), in which 100 metronomes set to different speeds are wound up and left to play until they are silent. A segment of the piece is sampled and repeatedly fed through the space, accumulating reverberation. This is not the capture and preservation of a historical moment in a historical space, but a continuous and generative erosion. The past echoes incessantly in the present, and each time it does, information is lost, distinct articulations are softened and the original recording and space continue to transform.

"bruits dans l'espace" by Matt Ingalls
Clarinet improvisations exploring the acoustics of the Berkeley Art Museum.
